12 Steps

Arrogance as a Stumbling Block

Psalm 19:12 NRSV
But who can detect their errors?
Clear me from hidden faults.

Romans 12:14-18 NRSV
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”

Are You Willing to Learn?

Proverbs 1:2-6 NRSV
For learning about wisdom and instruction,
for understanding words of insight,
for gaining instruction in wise dealing,
righteousness, justice, and equity;
to teach shrewdness to the simple,
knowledge and prudence to the young—
let the wise also hear and gain in learning,
and the discerning acquire skill,
to understand a proverb and a figure,
the words of the wise and their riddles.

12 Steps of Witnessing

The 12 Steps of the 12th Step

1. Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit before you approach the other person. God does not ask you to witness on your own!

2. Ask God to open the eyes and ears of the other person and make them a willing listener with an open heart.

3. Share on their level.

4. Address their needs. They have needs. Find out what they are. Perhaps you are in recovery from the same difficulty. Tell them how you had problems, what happened when Christ became part of the equation and how things are now.

5. Show them Christ by example–the way you live in everyday life. Let them observe how you handle situations, people, etc. doing things the way Jesus would do them.

12 Steps of Incest Survivors

1. In working the first step, when we “admitted we were powerless over the circumstances of our childhood–that our lives had become unmanageable,” we had at last found the courage to face the truth and tell it–we were practicing the principle of HONESTY.

2. In working the second step when we “came to trust that God, a Power greater than ourselves, would nurture, love and restore us to sanity,” we were practicing the principle of HOPE.

3. In working the third step when we “made a decision to begin a process of recovery and change, trusting in God as revealed in the Bible, to care for us and guide us in our journey,” we were practicing the principle of FAITH.

Biblical Roots of the 12 Steps: Cured

By Terry D.       Part 1 | Part 2

Finally, my questions have been answered. For years now, I’ve been searching for
answers about the origins of Alcoholics Anonymous, and the 12 Step Fellowships.
At first, I pretty much knew from instinct, and from previously studying the Bible,
that A.A. and the 12 Steps were Christian-based ideals and principles. Recently, I’ve
had the great pleasure of meeting Dick B., who is considered the leading A.A. historian
of the world at this moment. Dick B. has written several books about the Biblical
roots of A.A. through intensive and thorough research. In all of his books, Dick B.
