If you are looking for strength, hope or comfort in your eating disorder recovery, consider looking to the book of Psalms. May the Lord strengthen you and give you peace as He speaks to you through His Word.

For hope and strength, you can go to Psalm 46. From verse 1 which says, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” to verse 11 which states, “The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress” you can go to this Psalm when you need to know that God is with you and is strengthening you. You can find more of the same in Psalm 121. From verses 1 and 2, which declares “I lift up my eyes to the hills-where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth” to verses 5 and 6 which reassure, “The LORD watches over you-the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night” this short eight verse Psalm offers a lot of hope and strength.

Regardless of what has happened to you, though, God is even bigger than those hurts, and He can heal you of them.

Humility in Recovery

In recovery, we need to stay focused on the path ahead. There are many obstacles that can effortlessly obstruct our growth process. One deadly sin that we should always steer clear of is pride. Anyone in recovery is extremely susceptible to external hindrances because we were once slaves to them during our addiction. Outside hindrances can include numerous things, such as shame, resentment, fear, self-centeredness, and pride, among other things. If we are to evade these hazardous obstacles, we should harbor and uphold a humble spirit. Once we are finally clean and sober, have gone to meetings, and have worked the program, we learn that God alone can cure us of our past sins. We must surrender our will and our lives over to the care of God. And this, my friends, requires an act of humility.

Have you considered allowing God to have a greater role in your eating disorder recovery, but you find that something is holding you back? Perhaps you feel guilty over your eating disorder behaviors or maybe you feel unworthy of God’s help. If you do feel like this, please remember that you can’t earn His help anyway, but that you can be a recipient of His grace.

God’s work in our lives is not dependent on us. In other words, we don’t earn, and we can’t earn, what He gives to us. As we enter into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and become believers, it is a result of His grace, not because of anything we can do ourselves. We see this clearly spelled out in Ephesians 2:8-9, For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. From this time forward, we would do well to remember this same favor remains with us. We don’t earn God’s help, His blessings or His strength. Instead, we realize that He blesses us because He loves us.
