As I was walking back from the mailbox earlier today, I wished with all my heart that I did not have to use a cane. I’m okay at home because if my knees give way and I start to fall, I can grab hold of something but outside there is nothing to support me so I have to use it. I have to use a cane when I walk because I never know when more of the cartilage in my knees might tear.
Unless I am using the cane when that pain attacks me, I would literally fall. I sometimes feel like people are staring at me and I really dislike using it. Sometimes it embarrasses me to walk with it and I’m tempted not to use it. I think one of the reasons why it bothers me to use it is because I have been told that only a person who is weak uses something to help you walk.
There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky. The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them. Deuteronomy 33: 26-27 KJV
There is another cane that I use which I’m not ashamed to use and I lean heavily on it all day long and His name is Jesus. He is the one that holds me up and keeps me from falling when critical, sarcastic and judgmental words are said to me. He is there when satan attacks me with his poisonous barbs of discouragement and doubts. Without Jesus, my cane of life, I would never be able to withstand the attacks of the enemy, the world and the temptations. It is not a sin to be tempted because Jesus was tempted. It is only a sin when we act on the temptations.
We can’t make it on our own and I think that is the reason why we have so many problems and heartaches. We sometimes try to solve things by ourselves. Many times we try to change the way someone thinks and acts. We don’t have the power to change a person’s heart. Only Jesus can change a person’s heart. He can take a hardened heart and make it soft and tender. Someone asked me once if Jesus could change his heart. I told him “If Jesus could change me from a person who hated everybody, who didn’t trust anybody and wanted nothing to do with anyone, He can change anybody.” There is nothing too hard for Jesus!
If it seems that no matter how hard you try, you always seem to fail in changing yourself, your circumstances or someone else, give it all to Jesus. Then get out of the way and let Him bring you into victory. Sometimes we are guilty of taking our burdens and heartaches to Him and asking Him to help us, but as soon as we say “Amen” we try to figure out how we can fix them. May God forgive us for not putting our trust in Him.
