Distorted Images of God

Many people don’t even think of God. Many don’t know there IS a God. But what about you? If you are reading this then you obviously are aware there is a God. You are aware because you are reading this article. If you are just becoming aware, then this article will maybe help clear up some misconceptions people have about God.

I remember being a little girl and thinking that God was this big person, bigger than the mountains who would punish us if we did something wrong. I could imagine this country-sized hand coming down out of Heaven to hit me when I did something wrong. My image of God was distorted. Fortunately for me, God cleared up my misconceptions.

I have a book called NAMES OF GOD by Moody Press. In it there is a list of names by which we can know God as. It is by no means an exhaustive list, but it is a start. I would like to share God’s true image with you. I hope and pray that you will learn the true and loving nature of a God who would go to any lengths to see our salvation in Him.

From the book alone God is said to be called:

Elohim – to express the general idea of greatness and glory (page 12)

Jehovah – is translated “LORD” in capitals to distinguish it from another Hebrew word, Adonai, also translated Lord. Jehovah is absolutely self-existent, the One who in Himself possesses essential life, permanent existence. (page 19)

    El-shaddai – God Almighty

    Adonai – Lord

    Jehovah-jireh – God Provides

    Jehovah-rophe – God Heals

    Jehovah-nissi – God my Banner

    Jehovah-M’Kaddesh – God my Sanctification

    Jehovah-shalom – God my Peace

    Jehovah-tsidkenu 0 God my Righteousness

    Jehovah-rohi – God my Shepherd

Jehovah-shammah – God is there – with us

After you see all the wonderful things God is, contained in the following lists, it is hardly going to be possible to go on thinking that God is going to squash us if we do something wrong. He is not like our earthly fathers, mothers, friends and others we have contact with. He is unique in every way. You won’t be sorry for taking the time to read this article. It is uplifting, positive and, in my personal opinion, exciting!

God is a merciful. God who loves us so much that He gave us the greatest gift He had – His Son’s life in place of ours! What greater gift than to be given a chance at eternal life when we don’t even deserve it!!! GOD IS LOVE!!!

God loves us so much that He sent us Someone who will watch over us and guide us. Who is this person? It is the Holy Spirit. He lives within our hearts and is willing to guide us if we let Him.

God is our protector. He will protect us from the evil one of this world and all his servants. He will protect us when we are fighting a spiritual battle. God protects those He loves.

God is peace. When we are troubled, all we need to do is speak His name. In this case, I say “Jesus” because peace follows when I speak it. Whisper Jesus a few times and you will find out the peace that comes from just saying His name.

God is Light. God is the Light in this dark world. The world in which we live is very dark with wars, crimes, revenge, violence, anger, and so many things that go against His very nature. And in the darkness God sends His light – most often through us, His children. You may be in a dark place yourself and all of a sudden somebody will come along and when that person leaves, you feel lighter and released from a burden. That is God sending His light into your life.

God is our Strength. When we are weary, He will carry us on through. When we can’t take one more step, He lifts us and carries us until we are able to once again walk on our own.

God is our Shepherd. Psalm 23 is most well known as being the Shepherd’s Psalm. It is by far my favourite Psalm. In it God is described as leading us beside still waters where it is calm and safe. It tells us that He provides a meal for us while our enemies can only sit by and watch us feast. He also protects us with His rod. And even if we seem to walk in dark valleys of death and sorrow, He is there with us never leaving us alone.

God is merciful. To a creation that doesn’t deserve it, God grants mercy to those who ask for it. The first step to God’s mercy is through His Son’s death and resurrection which provides a way for man to meet with God once again. Adam and Eve broke that path but God’s Son Jesus, put the cross between God and man and by the cross we can commune once again with our Creator.

God is always present. He is everywhere at all times. He is the only creation that can actually do this. He can be here with me as I write this article and He can be where you are when you are reading this article as well as being overseas with anybody who asks for His presence. He is all knowing, all-present and omnipotent. He is always everywhere.

I could go on and on, but I am going to leave the following lists of the names of God for you to ponder yourself. The list is long, but stop and think Who we are talking about! Nobody else could have as many names as God and therefore He deserves a long and exhaustive list. And it is good for us to study it because He wants us to know Him – intimately, better and daily. Enjoy learning about our One True Loving God.

From searching the internet I have even more instances of names we can use to know God as. Some of these include:

    Yahweh – His Majesty

El-Elyon – The Most High God, the Exalted One

El Olam – God of eternity, God the everlasting One

El Berith – God of the covenant

Life – Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life … (Deuteronomy 30:20)

Love – But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever. (Psalms 52:8)

Spirit – God is spirit (John 4:24)

    Emmanuel – God with us.

Alpha and Omega – First and Last, King of Kings.

So, now I am curious. What is your opinion of God now? Is it different than before you read this? I know my view of God has changed drastically the more I write articles and learn of His true nature. I love God with everything He has given me both in my being and in my world. I know He will never leave me, hurt me, lie to me, abuse me or do any kind of harm to me. He is loving, powerful, protecting and so much more. He is reliable, honest, faithful, and He will never let me go through anything that He and I together cannot handle and make it through.

Dear God, thank You for loving me. Thank You for showing me the many wonderful Names You have. Thank You for teaching me that You are warm, caring, loving, encouraging, protecting and so much more. Bless Your name that is above all other names. May You be glorified in my life in this life and in life hereafter when I will be with You always. In Jesus’ holy name I pray, Amen.
