Past Events are in the Past

Past events are in the past.
What in tar-nation Can You do About Them??

Many of us tend to live in the past. Thinking about what caused their present condition, whatever that may be. These same people continually, and compulsively, trying to find the cause of something or why someone or some thing is interfering with their life.

Freedom From Bondage

Today is the day we celebrate our nation’s freedom yet there are so many people who are still in bondage. They are in bondage to schedules, deadlines, television, sports, alcohol, drugs, sex, profanity, and all the other things that come before Jesus and keep them from serving Him and spending time with Him as He has commanded us to do. He has told us that we should have no other gods before Him. However all too often we allow things that will one day mean nothing come before Him and our service to Him.

Feeling Weak?

Psalm 34:8
Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

It is easy to forget to feed ourselves spiritually. We get too “busy” to read our Bibles, pray, meditate or fellowship with others. As a result we start to starve and spiritual malnutrition sets in. This is when we are most susceptible to our addictions and dysfunctions. It is imperative for us, as recovering people, to feed ourselves on a daily, hourly or even momentary basis.

Why Am I Choosing This for My Body?

What manner of persons ought we to be?

I think that we, as Christians, sometimes are so inundated with the “stuff” of modern Christianity that we often forget the things that are most basic and most important in our faith, those things which separate us from the rest of the world. It is those things which define the manner of persons we ought to be, those things which define “holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God.”

Holiday Cheers

Psalms 119:117 KJV
Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.

It’s almost here! That time of year when drinking and eating just about anything and everything you can is the rule rather than the exception. The risk for relapse is extremely high, it’s holiday season. Thanksgiving, Kwanzaa, Chanukah, Christmas, Chinese New Year and other ritualistic celebrations that seem to justify drinking in excess and using drugs for some people are coming. The holiday season is the perfect time to jeopardize your program if you are not careful.

Sneaking Pleasure

Proverbs 21:6 NRSV
The getting of treasures by a lying tongue
is a fleeting vapor and a snare of death.

Most of us don’t see ourselves as getting treasures through lies. Likely we work at not lying and are very convicted when we choose to lie. However, because we are sinners, we sin. And I would propose that there are times that we hide what we do in an effort to get comfort from the suffering we experience. In other words, there are things we would prefer to do in the darkness, alone, without others watching that we might not do so readily in the presence of others (particularly other brothers and sisters in Christ).
