Unfortunately for those who like a crafty fag, the cost is going up for the second time in the space of a year. Smokers were also hit with an extra 1% duty on hand rolling tobacco this year on top of the normal annual duty increases.

They are "corrective statements" that a federal court judge ordered tobacco companies in the United States to release to inform the public about the dangers of smoking.

Cigarette companies are finally airing anti-smoking ads on TV, a decade after the federal government forced them to do so. Philip Morris USA, maker of Marlboro cigarettes, and British American Tobacco, maker of Camels, will air anti-smoking ads that lay out the deadly effects of smoking cigarettes on television beginning this Sunday.

Four schools to introduce voluntary ban on parents smoking at school gates

The youngsters at St Andrew's, Beamont, both in Orford, St Oswald's in Padgate and Glazebury Primary schools have joined forces to back a new Smoke Free School Gates initiative which will bring in a voluntary ban. Launched by LiveWire and Warrington Borough Council it aimed to protect pupils from second-hand smoke at the start and end of the school day and reduce the chances of them taking up smoking in later life.

Under court order, the largest U.S. tobacco companies have to publicize the deadly, addictive effects of smoking, more than a decade after a judge ruled that the industry had misled the public about the risks of cigarettes, which continue to kill about a half-million Americans annually. Locals react to the possibility of Indiana raising smoking age

The Indiana Chamber of Commerce says it will push lawmakers to change the law during the next legislative session in January. But, border areas like ours in Southwest Indiana might take the biggest hit if this law gets passed, taking away cash from local businesses with young smokers flocking to neighboring states.

Legislative leaders are leery of a proposal being backed by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce to raise the state's legal age for buying cigarettes from 18 to 21. The statewide business group announced a lobbying agenda Monday for the legislative session that starts in early January. The group says Indiana needs to reduce its smoking rate that causes $3 billion in annual heath care costs in the state.

Smoking study personalizes treatment

A simple blood test is allowing Vanderbilt University Medical Center researchers to determine which patients should be prescribed varenicline to stop smoking and which patients could do just as well, and avoid side effects, by using a nicotine patch. The first-of-its-kind clinical study combines smoking cessation with personalized medicine by learning whether the patient is a "normal" or "slow" metabolizer of nicotine, and then using that information to select medication to quit smoking.
