Legislative leaders are leery of a proposal being backed by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce to raise the state's legal age for buying cigarettes from 18 to 21. The statewide business group announced a lobbying agenda Monday for the legislative session that starts in early January. The group says Indiana needs to reduce its smoking rate that causes $3 billion in annual heath care costs in the state.

A simple blood test is allowing Vanderbilt University Medical Center researchers to determine which patients should be prescribed varenicline to stop smoking and which patients could do just as well, and avoid side effects, by using a nicotine patch. The first-of-its-kind clinical study combines smoking cessation with personalized medicine by learning whether the patient is a "normal" or "slow" metabolizer of nicotine, and then using that information to select medication to quit smoking.

New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry is planning to issue an advisory to all States on the health risks of electronic smoking, even as it is in a quandary over which legal provisions it should be banned under. As a fan of older print advertisements, I came across an ad this week for Iver Johnson Arms & Cycle Works of Fitchburg, which gave me an "oh my" reaction. In this ad by Iver Johnson claimed their firearms were so safe they could be handled by babies.
