Almost half of those who resolve a problem with drugs or alcohol do so without assistance

A study from the Recovery Research Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital has estimated, for the first time, the number of Americans who have overcome serious problems with the use of alcohol or other drugs. More than 9 percent of those responding to their survey of a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults indicated they had previously had such a problem but no longer did, and a little more than half of them reported accomplishing this with some sort of assistance.

Helping Clinicians Curb the Opioid Crisis

The New Jersey medical examiner recorded close to 1,600 drug-related deaths in 2015, the most recent year data was collected - a 16 percent increase from the year prior that has prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to list New Jersey as having a "statistically significant" increase in the overdose death rate. Most of these overdose deaths involve opioids, including heroin and now fentanyl - a particularly strong prescription opioid.

Rescue Mission to Hold Recovery Graduation Ceremony

The Santa Barbara Rescue Mission will hold its fall and final graduation ceremony for 2017 at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at Living Faith Church, 4597 Hollister Ave. There will be 14 men and women who will walk the stage to receive their certificates of completion from the life-changing 12-month, state-certified residential drug and alcohol treatment program. They will join 723 recovery program graduates since 1997.
