You Can Go First

“And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.”
Luke 6:31 King James Version

I wonder what would happen if we would say to three people who were waiting in the line behind us at the grocery store to be checked out “You can go first.” I believe that after they got over the shock of our kindness, their hearts and lives would be touched. Joyce Landorf Heatherley, a well known Christian speaker and author said on one of her teaching tapes “We are all ourselves at the grocery store. The real you comes out.”

When we go to the grocery store, we are not trying to impress people, we are just ourselves. Most of the time we are trying to get finished so that we can go home. A lot of times we get impatient if someone is ahead of us in the line at the checkout counter. If we are not polite and kind at the grocery store, they probably think that we are rude and demanding in our homes.

Jesus said “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” How many of us can honestly say that we treat people all the time as we want to be treated? I’m ashamed to admit it but I don’t treat people all the time as I want to be treated.

How about you? Are you treating people the way you want to be treated? The next time you go to the grocery store tell three people waiting behind you in the checkout line “You can go first”. They may not respond as you wish they would respond but you will make Jesus happy.
