Keep Preaching!

For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. Isaiah 55:10-11 King James Version

Over the last three and a half years, I have received eight emails from pastors who were discouraged because they didn’t think anybody was listening when they preached. I told all of the pastors the same thing that I am sharing in this devotion. Several years ago when I lived in East Texas, my pastor preached a sermon on the joy of Jesus. Pastor Byron said in his sermon “If you want to fly higher than a kite, start bragging on Jesus.” When he said that, I thought that he was crazy. It wasn’t until several years later that what he preached on that Sunday morning became real in my heart and in my life.

Several years later, I was still very depressed but I would have tried anything to get out of the depression that I had been in for so many years. I had tried everything else that the books, my therapists, my doctors and my counselors had recommended. Nothing worked! They told me to replace my negative thoughts with positive thoughts. I tried doing that but this world offers nothing that lasts; I couldn’t find anything that was positive. It was only when I started telling others how wonderful Jesus is and how much He loves them that the peace, the joy and the happiness that I had so longed for most of my life filled my heart.

Pastors, please don’t become discouraged and give up. Keep preaching because God will use your sermons to make changes in people’s hearts and lives. It may take many years for the sermons to penetrate people’s hearts just as it took many years for Pastor Byron’s sermon to penetrate my heart. You may never see the difference that your faithfulness to preach the Word of God makes in peoples hearts and lives. However, Jesus sees and His heart is made to rejoice because you were faithful to preach His Word.

I submit to you on the authority of the Word of God that what you preach will make a difference in the hearts and lives of people. Keep preaching! Never give up because what you say in your sermons will make the difference between precious souls spending eternity in hell with satan or spending eternity in Heaven with Jesus. Remember, it is Jesus who works in the hearts and lives of people and only our precious Saviour can change their hearts and lives. Keep preaching because not only are you making a difference in people’s hearts and lives, you are making Jesus happy.
