No Greater Friend

"As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:9-13 King James Version

Two years ago, I received an email from a person who was extremely upset and whose heart was breaking. The person told me "I made a bad decision and someone who I thought was my best friend turned away from me. I am devastated". I submit to you on the authority of the Word of God that there is no greater friend than Jesus.

Jesus proved His amazing and unconditional love for us and that He is our best friend when He allowed them to crucify Him on that cross of horror and torture. Jesus willingly went to the cross and died for us. There is nothing that could have kept Him on that cross of anguish and indescribable pain if He had wanted to come down. He went to the cross and He stayed on the cross because He loves us so much.

I think that sometimes we forget that Jesus has commanded us to love one another as He loves us. Loving one another is not an option; it is a commandment. We are to love one another unconditionally as Jesus loves us. I wonder how many of us would be willing to die for a friend. We may say that we would, but would we actually do it? We may never be put in a position where we will literally have to die for someone to prove our love, but there are other ways to prove our love for our friends.

When we go out to eat, we don’t always have to go to the restaurant that we like; we can go to the one that our friend likes. We can be quiet when our friend says something to us that hurts us. There are many little things that we can do to prove our love to our friends. If you are having difficulty thinking about things to do for your friends, ask Jesus to give you ideas about what you can do. He knows how it feels to have everyone leave you. He has felt the pain that we feel when our friends hurt us and leave us. Indeed, there is no greater friend than Jesus.

If you are hurting because you feel that your best friend has deserted you in your hour of need, tell Jesus all about it. He already knows but He wants you to talk to Him about it. He will be faithful to comfort and encourage you. Jesus is the best friend that you will ever have. He will never leave you, not even for one minute. Thank You, Jesus, for loving us unconditionally and for never leaving us.
