False Smiles – Just Praise Him

"To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified." Isaiah 61:3 KJV

I think all of us have had a time in our lives when it was difficult to smile, that is to give a genuine smile that came from our hearts. Then there are times when we smile but the smiles don’t come from our hearts. We plaster the smiles on our faces automatically because we don’t want people to know that we are hurting because they might not understand how we are feeling or worse, they might not even care and they might criticize, condemn and judge us.

We wear false smiles because when we share our hearts with someone, it is very risky and makes us very vulnerable. I remember when I accepted Jesus as my personal Saviour twenty seven years ago. I knew that a Christian should smile so when I got dressed in the morning, I made myself smile even if I didn’t feel like it. I was hurting inside but I had a false smile on my face.

Someone told me that I should put on praise music when I started to feel discouraged. I tried that, but it didn’t work. I have found out that it is very dangerous to wait until I am feeling discouraged to start praising Jesus. It just gives satan a chance to attack me and try to discourage me. We take our children to the doctor to get shots to prevent them from getting measles and mumps. We don’t wait until they have the diseases to take them to get the shots. It is very important that we don’t wait until we are discouraged to start praising Jesus.

If we will keep our eyes on Him, praise Him and constantly try with His help to make Him happy, we won’t have time to get discouraged. Listening to praise music is wonderful, however listening is not enough, we need to be praising Jesus from our hearts and with our mouths. We should be praising Him and saying to Him "Worthy are You, Jesus. Thank You, Jesus, for all You do for us. Oh, how I love You, Jesus." These expressions of praise that come from our hearts will bring joy to the heart of our precious Saviour.

Just knowing that our dear Heavenly Father and our precious Saviour loves us unconditionally should be enough to put joy and happiness in our hearts and make us smile a genuine smile. Don’t wait until you are discouraged to praise Him, just praise Him all the time. Start praising Jesus the minute you open your eyes in the morning and keep praising Him until you go to bed.

Praising Jesus not only keeps discouragement away; it also makes Him happy. If you don’t feel like praising Him, praise Him anyway. I’m sure that He didn’t feel like going to the cross and being abused but He did it anyway because He loves us so much. Do you love Him enough to praise Him even when you don’t feel like it?
