ADDICT-L

ADDICT-L is an electronic conference for mature discussion of the many types of addictions experienced by a large portion of society. The focus of this list is to provide an information exchange network for individuals interested in researching, educating or recovering from a variety of addictions. It is not the intent of this list to focus on one area of addiction, but rather to discuss the phenomena of addiction as it relates to areas of sexual, etc.

addict-l is intended primarily for "academic and scholarly discussion" of addiction-related topics. That doesn't mean you have to be an academic or a scholar to participate on the list, but it does mean you probably won't be interested in the list if you're looking for ES&H-type sharing. If you're interested in hard data, statistical research on outcomes of cognitive/behavioral therapies, psychopharmacological implications of neurotransmitter receptor site desensitization, and like that there, it may be just your cup of tea.

To subscribe, send the following command to: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.KENT.EDU Subject: leave blank Body of Message: Subscribe ADDICT-L (your name)

FLIMSEY REED E-MAIL LIST Flimsy Reeds, an on-line support group, which is comprised of sober alcoholics who have other chronic, disabling or life-threatening ailments.

A prospective Flimsy Reed is any AA member who adheres to the Third Tradition of Alcoholics Anonymous and who has a chronic, disabling, or life-threatening illness in addition to alcoholism. The Third Tradition of AA states, "The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking." Flimsy Reeds is not a true AA group, nor a "meeting" in the usual sense. We cannot be because we exclude healthy, non-disabled people from participating. We do, however, adhere to the AA Traditions in every way possible. Paula

S.M.A.R.T. Recovery's SMARTREC

Internet listing provides a forum for conversation, idea sharing and encouragement. To subcribe, send the following message to listserv@sjuvm.stjohns.edu: subscribe SMARTREC yourfirstname yourlastname.

Website maintained at: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/mike888/

S.M.A.R.T. Recovery( (Self-Management And Recovery Training)
is an abstinence-based, not-for-profit organization with a sensible
self-help program for people having addictive behavior problems. It
includes many ideas and techniques to help you change your life from
one that is self- (and other -) destructive and unhappy to one that is
       constructive and satisfying.

SMART is not a spin-off from Alcoholics Anonymous. No one will
label you an "alcoholic" or addict. You are neither diseased nor
powerless, and if you do not believe in a religion or spirituality,
that's fine. If you do, that's fine, too. We teach common sense
self-help procedures designed to empower you to abstain and to
develop a more positive lifestyle. When you succeed at following
our approach, you may graduate from the program, or you may stay
       around to help others.

ACCESSING RECOVERY RESOURCES VIA EMAIL

RECOVERY RESOURCES on vector.casti.com can now be accessed via email from any Internet-reaching system. This means you can extract files from the archives even if you only have a CompuServe, AOL, FidoNet, or mail-only Internet BBS connection.

gopher://gopher.casti.com:70/00/AA/RECOVERY-BY-EMAIL

To use this service, send electronic mail to ftpmail@vector.casti.com

The subject line of your message will be ignored. Your message must begin with "open" on a line by itself and end with "quit" on a line by itself. Between those two delimiters, you may use the following commands:

ls [pathname] short listing of pathname.
Default pathname is current directory.

dir [pathname] long listing of pathname.
Default pathname is current directory.

cd pathname Change directory.

get pathname Get a file and email it back.

You are strongly encouraged to use the following message on your first use of this service:
open
get ABOUT.VECTOR
cd pub/recovery
dir
quit

This script will cause the ftpmail program to send you 4 messages in response:
1. An acknowledgement that your request was received and is queued
2. A short file about vector.casti.com
3. A directory of the recovery files and areas at vector.casti.com
4. A receipt that your request was successfully processed

A few notes about this service:

* Since any file you request will be emailed back to you, there is no need for concern about filename length.
* Any file that ends in .Z is a binary file. It will be delivered to you as a uuencoded file. To make use of this file, you will have to uudecode it and then uncompress it.
* If your mailer only supports small messages, you can use the command size #K
where # is the largest size (in K) that your mailer supports. Files larger than this limit will be fragmented into as many pieces as necessary before they are transferred. For example, America Online has a maximum message size of 250K, so any AOL users would need to include the line size 250K if they were attempting to transfer large files via email.

For more information about this service, send a message containing only "help" on a line by itself. Please direct any questions or comments to bill@casti.com

WOMEN FOR SOBRIETY

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

1. WFS is an organization whose purpose is to help all women recover from problem drinking (and all other forms of addiction) through the discovery of self, gained by sharing experiences, hopes and encouragement with other women in similar circumstances.
2. WFS is unique in that it is an organization of women for women. It recognizes women's emerging role and her necessity for self-esteem and self-discovery to meet today's conflicts.
3. WFS is not affiliated with AA. Members of WFS often belong to AA. However, each organization has its individual purpose and should be kept separated.
4. WFS believes that drinking (and other indulgences...) began to overcome stress, loneliness, frustration, emotional deprivation, or any number of other kinds of harrassment. Dependence and addiction resulted. This physiological addiction can only be overcome by abstinence. Mental and emotional addiction is overcome with the knowledge of self gained through Women For Sobriety.
5. WFS meetings are led by a Certified Moderator, one who is stable in her sobriety and is well-versed in the WFS "New Life" Program. She lives by the WFS philosophy: forget the past, plan for tomorrow, and live today. 6. Membership in WFS requires a desire to stop drinking and a sincere desire for a new life.
