The U.S. Food and Drug Administration aims to reduce nicotine levels in cigarettes while exploring measures to move smokers toward e-cigarettes, in a major regulatory shift announced on Friday that sent traditional cigarette company stocks plunging. The move means FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb has thrown his regulatory weight on the side of those advocating for e-cigarettes in the debate over whether they potentially hold some public health benefits.

University of California San Diego School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center researchers performed a population-level analysis of national surveys conducted from 2001 to 2015 and found that in the United States the smoking cessation rate increased for the first time in 15 years. The study suggests e-cigarettes helped users of the electronic devices to quit smoking traditional cigarettes.

New Jersey already has one of the nation's lowest rates of smoking, and the pending increase of the minimum age to buy tobacco products to 21 years old, taking effect Nov. 1, is expected to cut it further. But what kind of help with quitting will be there for 19- and 20-year-old smokers who can no longer legally buy cigarettes? Gov. Chris Christie has vetoed a plan to increase cessation spending by $7 million, but the state Department of Health says it will be able to deal with any increase in demand.

Around half of 14- and 15- year old New Zealanders have carried out at least one behaviour during the past year to discourage smoking, most often by telling their peers that smoking is bad for their health; to stop smoking; that they do not like smoking; and that smoking is a waste of money. By contrast, fewer than one in ten 14- and 15- year olds did something to encourage smoking among their peers, most typically by giving them a cigarette or offering to share a cigarette.

A new bill introduced by two Honolulu City Councilmen takes aim at smoking in vehicles while a minor is present. Bill 70 calls to outlaw smoking traditional and electronic cigarettes in a motor vehicle if a person under the age of 18 is a passenger.
