Rwanda becomes second country in Africa to ban shisha smoking

Rwanda has banned smoking of water-pipe tobacco, popularly known as shisha following Tanzania's lead. Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli imposed the ban in July last year, making the East African country the first to outlaw the practice on the continent.

Tourists dodge Thailand beach smoking ban

In a move to preserve its pristine environment, the Department of Marine and Coastal resources began prohibiting tourists from lighting up in Dongtan beach, Pattaya, as the first beach among 24 beaches in 15 provinces.

One Percent of NJ Tobacco Tax Revenue Will Go to Anti-Smoking Initiatives

Tobacco giant Philip Morris is quietly funding an "anti-smoking" foundation offering $1 billion in "grants" to public health leaders Derek Yach, president of The Foundation for a Smoke-Free World, sent a letter to 344 public health researchers and groups inviting them to bid for grants from a $1b fund set up by tobacco giant -- the list was a roster of Yach's former colleagues from his stint at the World Health Organization. The WHO has condemned Yach's use of this list, and Yach's own protestations that his group is not beholden to the tobacco industry are belied by other leaked emails from Yach's account, which shows that he was in ongoing communications with Philip Morris employees about the grants.

More teenagers are using marijuana or vaping on a daily basis than smoking cigarettes, according to the results of a newly released National Institutes of Health survey. Polling of 43,703 public and private school students from throughout the U.S. revealed that cigarette use among eighth, 10th- and 12th-graders has declined to the lowest levels since the NIH began conducting its Monitoring the Future Survey in 1975, the research agency said Thursday.
