How treatment for eating disorders in Birmingham is skyrocketing

This was up from 132 treatment episodes in 2010/11, with 2015/16 seeing the highest number of treatment episodes in at least six years. In Dudley CCG, there were 41 episodes of treatment in 2015/16, double the 19 recorded in 2010/11, although this was down from 53 in 2013/14, while Wolverhampton CCG has seen numbers rise from 24 in 2010/11 to 52 in 2014/15, with 50 episodes in 2015/16.

By combining whole exome sequencing, machine learning, and network analysis, researchers have identified new, ultra-rare gene mutations within specific biological pathways that may contribute to eating disorders. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and the Eating Recovery Center in Dallas, Texas, also shows that targeting one of the pathways with a drug already approved for diabetes reduces food consumption in a mouse model of binge eating, suggesting that the findings might be useful for developing new, targeted treatments for eating disorders.

The Departments of Labor, Treasury, and Health and Human Services recently released a frequently asked question regarding the implementation of the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 , as amended by the Affordable Care Act and the 21st Century Cures Act , with respect to eating disorders. Under MHPAEA, any financial requirements or treatment limitations imposed by a plan on mental health and substance use disorder benefits cannot be more restrictive than the predominant financial requirements and treatment limitations that apply to substantially all medical and surgical benefits.
