During a presentation at the US Psychiatric and Mental Health Congress in New Orleans, Louisiana, Mark Zimmerman, MD, said studies show that the presence of a comorbid disorder or specific symptom were the most important factors driving treatment decisions when clinicians picked an antidepressant, and anxiety was the symptom they cited most frequently. Major depressive disorder frequently appears with other disorders and comorbidities; experts say it's more the rule than the exception.

Transgender youth at higher risk for mental health issues

In a study published this month, UT researchers found that transgender adolescents are twice as likely to have thoughts of suicide and are up to four times as likely to be involved in substance abuse when compared to the general population. "Unfortunately, the findings were not surprising," said co-author Stephen Russell, a Human Development and Family Sciences professor.
