The facilitator of a new Waterside support group for people living with depression says her own recovery from the illness showed her how talking with people who'd lived through similar experiences can really help. Patricia Roddy, who will facilitate Aware Defeat Depressions's new weekly support group sessions in the Shared Future Centre on Irish Street every Wednesday at 7.30 p.m., uged people to come along if they feel they could avail of the support.

According to a new study published in the journal "Hormones and Behavior," men face a higher risk of suffering the baby blues if their testosterone levels drop after their children are delivered. Experts from the University of Southern California said 10 percent of men report symptoms of depression following the birth of a child - about double the typical rate of depression in males.

Lab mice treated with ethanol displayed symptoms of depression similar to those observed in humans with severe drinking problems, also known as alcohol use disorder.

Existing antidepressant drug could slow progression of Parkinson's

Michigan State University scientists now have early proof that an antidepressant drug that's been around for more than 50 years could slow the progression of Parkinson's. In a proof-of-concept study, published in the journal Neurobiology of Disease , the drug nortriptyline, which has been used to treat depression and nerve pain, stopped the growth of abnormal proteins that can build up in the brain and lead to the development of the disease.
