Lay interventions for depression and drinking

Brief psychological interventions delivered by lay counsellors in primary care were effective and cost-effective for patients with depression and harmful drinking in India, according to two studies in PLOS Medicine by Vikram Patel of Harvard Medical School, USA, and colleagues from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London, UK and Sangath, India. The authors have previously reported the effectiveness of the two interventions, Healthy Activity Programme and Counselling for Alcohol Problems , at 3 months; however, the longer-term benefits of the interventions were previously unknown.

An easy opportunity to screen for postpartum depression

Screening mothers for depression during early well-child visits led to significantly fewer reports of depression at nine months postpartum, a new study of 3,000 Dutch women found. Just 3% of the screened mothers experienced minor or major depression at nine months postpartum, compared with 8.4% of the mothers who weren't screened during the visits, according to the research, published Thursday in the journal Pediatrics.
