Previous research has linked low levels of allopregnanolone -- known to scientists as "allo" -- to depression and anxiety, which are common mood disorders associated with anorexia nervosa and obesity.

Sage Therapeutics on Thursday said its drug to treat moderate and severe postpartum depression succeeded in reducing symptoms in patients enrolled in two late-stage trials, sending its shares up 50 percent in pre-market trade. Sage said it plans to submit an application for marketing approval of the injectable drug, brexanolone, to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2018.

Part of the excitement over the brexanolone results stem from the lack of treatments for postpartum depression, which is characterized by such symptoms as depressed mood, crying, anxiety and feelings of worthlessness or shame and affects an estimated 10% to 20% of women giving birth in the U.S. But investors have also got their eyes on an another prize: Sage's other therapy, SAGE-217, which is in mid-stage trials for major depressive disorder, also known as depression.

Brexanolone achieved the primary endpoint in both trials, a mean reduction from baseline in the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression total score compared to placebo at 60 hours .
