Researchers at McLean Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, have discovered for the first time that computerized brain training can result in improved cognitive skills in individuals with bipolar disorder. In a paper published in the October 17, 2017, edition of The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry , the researchers suggest that brain exercises could be an effective non-pharmaceutical treatment for helping those with bipolar disorder function more effectively in everyday life.

A mother has warned about the dangers of taking an epilepsy drug during pregnancy over fears it causes disabilities in children. Deborah Mann, of South Oxhey, is campaigning with the Organisation for Anti-Convulsant Syndrome charity to raise awareness about women taking Sodium Valproate while pregnant to treat medical conditions including epilepsy, migraines and Bipolar disorder.

Scientists are trying to crack the genetic code of bipolar disorder to end the trial and error approach to treatment for many of the 250,000 Australians suffering the complex mental illness. A study conducted at Neuroscience Research Australia will conduct whole genome sequencing of close to 1200 individuals with bipolar disorder.
