As I near the halfway point of my second pregnancy, a new study - led by Loubaba Mamluk, a senior research associate in epidemiology at University Hospital Bristol in the United Kingdom - addressed this very question.

New Program to Address Opioid Crisis

In response to the opioid crisis, Rush University Medical Center is developing a comprehensive program that will provide opioid screening and treatment for patients identified as opioid users on the medical and surgical inpatient units and will expand to outpatient screening. "The goal is to increase access to treatment and to reduce opioid and heroin overdose related deaths through prevention, treatment and recovery," said Dr. Niranjan Karnik, a psychiatrist at Rush who will be overseeing the program.

Researchers from the University of Adelaide have found a new link between the brain's immune system and the desire to drink alcohol in the evening. In laboratory studies using mice, researchers have been able to switch off the impulse to drink alcohol by giving mice a drug that blocks a specific response from the immune system in the brain.

GCASA looking to build methadone clinic addition to East Main Street location

The executive director of the Genesee/Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse said a proposed 2,700-square foot addition to the agency's campus at 424 E. Main St. in Batavia is on a fast track to completion pending approval by the City Planning & Development Committee next week. Speaking after Thursday night's Genesee County Planning Board meeting, where the site plan was recommended for approval without stipulations, John Bennett said the clinic could be "up and running in 14 months" and will be funded by an $820,000 Rapid Treament Expansion Grant from New York State.

A new outpatient clinic for people suffering from opioid addiction will open Monday at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, the hospital confirmed Wednesday. The Medication-Assisted Treatment Addiction Clinic, commonly referred to as a MAT, is similar in some ways to a methadone clinic, but methadone will not be among the drugs administered there, according to Jordan Barbour, director of clinical operations, psychiatry, and addiction medicine, who is overseeing operation of the clinic.
