Young Men Are Dying of Alcoholism in Russia's Far East

Seventy percent of deaths among men under 35 in Russia's Far East are due to alcohol-related causes, the country's chief health official warned on Wednesday. While chronic alcoholism and alcohol-related psychosis affect 60 out of every 100,000 Russians on average, "The average figure for the Far Eastern District is more than 120 [per 100,000]," Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova was cited as saying by the RBC business outlet at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.

Council commits $5,000 to successful addictions program

Council approved a $5,000 cash grant to the Penticton District Community Resources Society to help fund the SMART program which provides "recovery coaches" for those looking to break free from drug and alcohol addiction. Smart Recovery regional co-ordinator Judy Poole made a passionate plea to council sharing personal stories of her own son who had battled anxiety and depression and later found himself addicted to pills.

Opioid abuse can be treated successfully in primary care settings, study finds

Combining substance abuse treatment with regular medical care can successfully treat people with opioid or alcohol addiction, providing an option that might expand treatment and lower the cost of caring for people caught up in the nation's opioid epidemic, according to a new RAND Corporation study. Patients who enrolled in a program that combined substance abuse treatment with primary medical care were more than twice as likely to receive treatment for opioid or alcohol abuse, as compared to peers who received usual primary care services , according to the study.

A BOOK aimed at shedding light on the psychological and spiritual origins of substance addiction, The Spiritual Paradox of Addiction, was launched at the Mumbai Press Club on Monday. The book is by Dr Ashok Bedi, a Jungian psychoanalyst, co-authored by Father Joseph Pereira, who started the first Alcoholics Anonymous through his parish in Mumbai and also started the Kripa Foundation that aims to help alcoholics recover.

Judge tosses most serious charges in Penn State fraternity death

A Pennsylvania judge has dismissed charges of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault against eight fraternity members at Penn State in the hazing death of a pledge who fell down the stairs after drinking heavily. Judge Allen Sinclair of Centre County allowed trial on lesser charges against 12 members of Beta Theta Pi and dismissed four other fraternity members from the case, report , Reuters and the Associated Press .
