Sask. drug plan adds alcohol addiction medication

As of July 1, the Saskatchewan Prescription Drug Plan offers two drug treatments for those struggling with alcohol addiction: Revia , which is used to remove cravings, and Campral , which helps maintain sobriety for those who have already quit drinking. The two drugs are used in-part with a counselling program, which meets the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region's Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan.

Saskatchewan covering 2 drugs used for treatment of alcohol use disorder

Two new drugs have been added to the Saskatchewan Prescription Drug Plan for people being treated with alcohol use disorder. Revia and Campral , which are used as part of an alcohol counselling program, were added on July 1. "Our government is committed to providing services to help people struggling with addictions," Health Minister Jim Reiter said in a release.

A report released on Thursday, June 22 by the Canadian Institute for Health Information showed that 212 people each day in the years 2015 to 2016 - or about 77,000 admissions - had been treated in Canadian hospitals for alcohol poisoning, alcohol withdrawal, liver disease, alcohol abuse, and other conditions that are "100 percent caused by the harmful consumption of alcohol". This meant that more people were hospitalized due to alcohol-related reasons than heart issues such as heart attacks.

An estimated 20 percent of Michigan adults fit the definition of "excessive drinkers" as defined by the federal Centers for Disease Control, according to the most recent health surveys. That percentage includes Michigan adults who fit the CDC definition of binge drinkers -- i.e., men who consume five or more drinks or women who have four or more drinks on one occasion at least once a month.

Alcohol consumption putting vast majority of Europeans at risk of digestive cancers

Citizens across the EU are consuming an average of 2 alcoholic drinks per day, placing drinkers at a 21% increased risk of developing colorectal cancer, in addition to other digestive cancers, a report finds. The report, launched today by United European Gastroenterology, revealed that the average daily intake of alcoholic drinks was 'moderate' in all 28 EU states, placing these citizens at a heightened risk of both colorectal and oesophageal cancer .

Researchers at Imperial College London have announced that they were granted ethical approval to conduct a small MDMA trial on people with alcohol addiction in the city of Bristol , The Guardian reported last week.

Sacred walk' finishes on Canada Day

About 35 First Nations residents completed their 322-kilometre healing walk in Fort William First Nation near Bannon's Gas Bar on Saturday. The seven-day walk, which started at Ginoogaming First Nation near Longlac on June 25, embraced a spiritual focus while raising awareness about problems facing many indigenous people including drug and alcohol addiction, cancer, and missing women and men.
