Lewiston hospital upgrading facilities to treat drug addicts

With the help of money from the state, a Niagara County hospital is upgrading its facilities to treat people suffering from drug and alcohol addiction. Clearview Treatment Services at Mount Saint Mary's in Lewiston is adding eight more patient beds as part of a $1.2 million expansion.

Zanuck, who has known Clapton for 25 years, directed "Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars," following the life of the 72-year-old British guitarist from childhood to international stardom, through his struggle with drugs and alcohol and the 1991 death of his four-year-old son.

Judge took leave to treat alcoholism months after complaint

A court filing shows a now-retired federal judge took medical leave for treatment of severe alcoholism more than seven months after court officials in Louisiana received a complaint questioning her ability to serve on the bench. An order signed last month by the chief judge for the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals says the court appointed a committee to investigate the April 2016 complaint about U.S. District Judge Patricia Minaldi's "possible disability."

Nome struggles with hard-drinking Gold-Rush legacy

The old Gold Rush town of Nome on Alaska's western coast is trying again to address the hard drinking that's deeply entrenched there - this time with a proposed law prohibiting intoxication in public places like the city's main street, where people can be seen stumbling along or passed out near tourist shops. The measure would for the first time outlaw intoxication in public rights of way, such as Nome's Front Street and its sea wall.

Czech study: Alcohol abuse cuts length of life by over 20 years

Excessive use of alcohol cuts the life expectancy by more than 20 years, a recent study by the National Institute of Mental Health has found, NUDZ spokesman Jan Cervenka told CTK. The extensive study was conducted by researcher Blanka Nechanska, who compared the data of people hospitalised on account of alcohol use from 1994 to 2013 with the data on the deaths in this period.

Perth trialling world-first $1 meth cure

The study, led by WA Health emergency medicine specialist Dr Amanda Stafford, will use the drug Baclofen, which was licensed in the 1970s as a muscle relaxant. The treatment using the Baclofen pill, which costs as little as $1 a day, has since been found through overseas trials on humans and animals to act as an anti-craving agent for treating alcoholism and cocaine addiction.
