Dr. Greg Murphy, who founded the Kingston Orthopaedic and Pain Institute, said that the 2017 guidelines for Canadian doctors who treat chronic pain unrelated to cancer have "created fear" of prescribing among physicians.

There were 978 overdose deaths from illegal drugs in B.C. in 2016 while Ontario had 865 deaths last year as a result of opioid-related toxicity, the Star reported.

Trial begins for pain doctor charged with patient deaths
