Sarah Bowen, director of student services, and other administrators at Stevenson High School realize when teenagers enter adolescence, they encounter difficult challenges for the first time, including depression, which can lead to suicide. To address the often unspoken effects of depression and equip students with knowledge to help themselves and other classmates, Stevenson officials launched a new program, called "Signs of Suicide," for all freshmen this fall, following other area school districts that have done the same in recent years.

Arthur Janov, 'Primal scream' psychologist, was 93

Arthur Janov, the psychologist who created, practiced and preached primal therapy, a sensation of the 1970s in which patients were coached to let out sobs or screams as they relived childhood trauma in a quest to overcome neurosis, died Oct. 1 at his home in Malibu. He was 93. Through his treatment of celebrities - among them entertainers John Lennon, Yoko Ono and James Earl Jones - Dr. Janov became a celebrity in his own right beginning in the 1970s.
