Member of Parliament Juliet Cuthbert Flynn asked for data to show the number of deaths that can be directly traced to smoking, and guests at yesterday's Human Resources and Social Development Committee meeting of Parliament were happy to oblige with frightening figures of many afflicted and dying at the National Chest Hospital. The former athlete, gym instructor, trainer and fitness guru received support when she said Jamaicans must be made aware of such dangers, just like they are about lifestyle diseases such as hypertension, obesity and diabetes.

A care home has been hit with a six-figure fine after a resident with Parkinson's disease died after his pyjamas caught fire when smoking a cigarette unattended. Horrified daughter Hayley Boxall fainted at the scene as staff at Barnfield Care Home, Horley , fought to put out the flames which left her father fatally injured, Guildford Crown Court heard.

The City Government here has strengthened its anti-smoking drive through the "Bantay-Usok Sigarilyo" orientation held at Heroes Hall on Tuesday, September 5. Gender and Development Focal Person Amy Catacutan said the "Bantay-Usok Sigarilyo" program -- held as part of the celebration of Women's Week - to strengthen the existing City Ordinance No. 2014-007 "Smoke-Free Ordinance of the City of San Fernando" which prohibits the use, sale, distribution and advertisement of cigarettes, other tobacco products and electronic nicotine delivery systems in specific places in the City of San Fernando.

THE Municipal Trial Court in Cities-Office of the Clerk of Court Branch 7 recorded the number of pending cases on anti-smoking ordinance is higher than the number of complaints received by the court in August. Court presiding Judge Rufino Ferraris Jr. said the office has 149 archived cases for the anti-smoking ordinance due to fake name and/or incomplete name, and incomplete address of the accused, which also causes delay on proceedings.

Discarded cigarette butt sparks fire "several feet high" near shop in Colchester
