The timing was purely coincidental, but just as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration was announcing a major change in direction on e-cigarettes, new research confirmed once again, just how powerful the harm reduction benefits of vaping really are. And as Canada inches closer to new federal regulations for e-cigarettes, we need to ensure that we recognize and embrace this potential and not lump vaping in with tobacco smoking or do anything to discourage smokers from making the switch.

High-fat diet linked to lung cancer risk

People who eat a lot of saturated fat - the "bad" kind of fat that's abundant in foods like butter and beef - are more likely to develop lung cancer than individuals on low-fat diets, a recent study suggests. Compared to adults who didn't get a lot of fat in their diets, people who ate the most total fat and saturated fat were 14 percent more likely to get lung malignancies, the study found.

Fire conditions prompt regional ban on motorized vehicles

Although acknowledged it will be difficult to enforce, the Regional District Okanagan Similkameen has banned the use of all fireworks, motorized vehicles and smoking in all public wooded, grass and brush areas in unincorporated areas.

Armenian Government Moves To Curb Smoking

The government announced on Thursday plans to at least restrict smoking in public places and raise cigarette prices as part of a new strategy of curbing tobacco use in Armenia. "Smoke less," Prime Minister Karen Karapetian declared as his cabinet approved the program aimed at reducing the large number of smokers in the country by at least 1.5 percent annually for the next three years.

The Shawnee County Commission on Thursday heard the first reading of a proposal to raise the tobacco purchase age in unincorporated areas from 18 to 21. Three-quarters of adults in the United States favor raising the minimum smoking age to 21, a Shawnee County health department employee told county commissioners Thursday. Craig Barnes, the department's health promotions coordinator, encouraged commissioners to approve a proposal they'll consider next week that would ban the sale or furnishing of tobacco products to anyone under 21 in the county's unincorporated areas.

Menthol limits: Ban could close vaping escape hatch for smokers

Millions of people have been able to quit or cut back on smoking by switching to electronic cigarettes. A 2014 consumer survey of adult e-cigarette users found that approximately 61 percent cited fruit-, dessert-, candy-, savory- and beverage-flavored liquids as their primary flavor, while just 25 percent cited tobacco or menthol tobacco.

London Fire Brigade issues warning after discarded cigarette causes fire in Battersea flat

London Fire Brigade have issued a warning to smokers after a discarded cigarette is believed to have caused a flat fire in Battersea. Five fire engines and 31 firefighters attended the fire, which originated on a fifth floor balcony in Holman Road on July 31. A LFB spokesperson said: "If you're a smoker it's absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you've finished smoking it.
