According to research published Jan. 24, in the Journal of the American Medical Association, U.S. cancer death rates have steadily climbed in parts of the country struggling with obesity, heavy smoking and other ills - a stark contrast with the national trend and improvements in wealthier pockets of the country. An irate man contacted me recently to complain he'd been turned down for back surgery because he's a smoker.

UPDATE 1-BAT looks to double number of vaping products markets

Feb 23 British American Tobacco wants to double the number of countries where it sells vaping products this year and again in the next, it said on Thursday, after the world's second-largest tobacco company saw full-year sales volumes rise only slightly. BAT and its rivals, including Philip Morris International and Japan Tobacco International, have been investing in cigarette alternatives as a growing health consciousness reduces smoking rates, and economic instability curbs consumer spending.

Anti-smoking bill deserves backing

A bill working its way through the state legislature that would increase Indiana's cigarette tax, raise the legal age for smoking and limit smokers' rights when it comes to the work place should be supported for the benefit of the state's overall health. Republican Rep. Cindy Kirchhofer, R-Beech Grove, is promoting the measure as a Healthy Indiana bill, rather than a revenue-generating bill.

Top students more likely to smoke pot, drink alcohol, study says

British teens with the highest test scores are less likely to smoke cigarettes yet more likely to drink alcohol and smoke pot compared with teens with lower scores, according to a study published Wednesday in the British Medical Journal Open. Although some people believe smart students simply have a tendency to experiment, James Williams and Gareth Hagger-Johnson, co-authors of the new study, say these patterns of substance use may continue into adulthood.

Vancouver students call out movies promoting smoking in #NotSmokingHot campaign

Just a few days before the 89th Academy Awards are handed out in Los Angeles, a group of students at David Thompson Secondary in Vancouver is calling out films and directors that, they say, are glamourizing smoking to young people. Grade 10 student Alisha Kumar says 15 of the Oscar nominees this year feature smoking and all but one of the 15 films are rated for youth audiences in British Columbia.

House Bill 500, now pending the Maryland General Assembly, provides for a proposed amendment to Section 11-104 of the Maryland Condominium Act that would allow a condominium's bylaws to include "a restriction or prohibition on smoking tobacco products within the units or in the common elements." The proposed legislation would also amend Section 11-111 to authorize a council of unit owners to adopt a rule imposing such a restriction or prohibition.

Cancer death rates falling faster for men across Europe

It is anticipated that lung cancer will cause around 275,700 deaths this year - about 20% of all cancer deaths Experts have predicted that during 2017, 131.8 men out of every 100,000 across the European Union will die from cancer - a dip of 8.2% when compared to 2012 figures. There will be a 3.6% fall in the death rate for women, according to the study published in the journal Annals of Oncology.

Smokers are more likely than non-smokers to require reoperations to treat surgical site infections after undergoing total joint replacement procedures, according to a new study in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery . Researchers at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia, Pa., reviewed the records of more than 15,000 patients who underwent approximately 17,000 hip and knee replacements between 2000 and 2014.
