U.S. House bill would exempt e-cigarettes from tobacco regulations

A bill expected this week in the U.S. House of Representatives would weaken a Food and Drug Administration rule governing e-cigarettes and represent a major victory for the $4.4 billion U.S. vaping industry. The bill, from Republican Representative Duncan Hunter of California, would reverse the Obama administration's "Deeming Rule" which deems e-cigarettes to be tobacco products, subject to the same strict regulations governing traditional cigarettes.

Health advocates take aim smoking in casinos and taverns

Volunteers from the American Cancer Society fanned out across the Pennsylvania Capitol on Tuesday to rally support for extending Pennsylvania's indoor smoking ban to casinos, private clubs and other businesses. The issue has become a perennial one since Clean Indoor Air Act was enacted in 2008 with exemptions for businesses that have historically been smoker-friendly.

Vt. Senate votes down raising smoking age

Several Democratic senators had been crafting the proposal throughout the year, but when it came up for a vote last month, there weren't enough votes to pass it and the bill was put aside. Tuesday, the measure was resurrected after supporters offered a number of changes designed to make it more palatable to senators.

Warning about smoking after bedding catches fire in Crawley home

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service say that this month is smoking safety month, a focus that is very important as smoking related fires are the most dangerous nationally.

USC students question effects of new smoke-free policy

On Jan. 10, USC joined 1,827 higher education institutions across the country in prohibiting smoking on campus. The University banned cigarettes, e-cigarettes, hookahs and other products on all University-owned property, including fraternity and sorority houses on the Row.

DNR on high alert during fire danger across Wisconsin

The Department of Natural Resources was on full alert Monday with all but five Wisconsin counties having high or very high fire danger risk. "A day like today again the fire danger is going to be very high this afternoon so everybody available for staffing in wildlife and fire is working today specifically for that," said Lucas Schmidt, DNR Waupaca Forestry Team Leader The National Weather Service says smokers should not throw cigarettes out the window and people should be careful around dry grassy areas.

There's this old man who walks along the fence next to the hospital, or, say, down near town, wobbling in his loose, flapping shoes, digging around in the garbage can on the corner, smoking a cigarette, clutching it between his battered fingers, or simply walking with his shoulders braced as if he knew he was some kind of fodder for speculation, because it seems to be so consistent, his homeless rooting, keeping to a pattern, moving south on Midland Avenue for a half mile to Franklin Place and then left on Franklin and down Franklin to River Road, along River Road to Front Street, left on Front and up Front back to Midland, and then, presumably, around again.

The researchers from Cleveland Clinic and New York University School of Medicine found that obesity resulted in as much as 47 percent more life-years lost than tobacco, and tobacco caused similar life-years lost as high blood pressure.

NYC moves to raise cost of cigarettes to nation's highest

It already is the city that never sleeps - and if Mayor Bill de Blasio has his way it will become the city that never smokes. De Blasio on Wednesday announced a package of proposed bills that would, among other things, raise the base price of a pack of cigarettes from $10.50 to $13, making New York home to the costliest cigarettes in the country.
