Injectable extended-release naltrexone appears to be as safe and effective as daily oral buprenorphine-naloxone for treating opioid dependence, according to a Norway-based, noninferiority trial in JAMA Psychiatry . Roughly 160 opioid-dependent adults who were discharged from addiction treatment programs were randomized to receive either oral buprenorphine-naloxone daily or extended-release intramuscular naltrexone every 4 weeks for 12 weeks.

Four of Pennsylvania's biggest health systems each have received $1 million state grants to expand availability of medicines widely seen as some peoples' best hope of overcoming addiction to heroin and opioid painkillers. The health systems are expected to use the grants to establish a "hub and spoke" approach where a centrally-located addiction specialist will support family doctors who want to prescribe medications to patients who are addicted.

The North East area where alcohol treatment is 54% higher than England rate

Patients treated for alcohol problems in North Tyneside are 50% more likely to be readmitted as an emergency within a month than the expected rate in England. In the North Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group area there were 289 admissions within 30 days of a patient being discharged following treatment for an alcohol related condition between April 2014 and March 2017.
