According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, liver cancer incidence increased 2.3 percent per year between 2003 and 2012, and the rate of deaths is increasing faster than for other types of cancer .

Scientists develop 'liver friendly' alcohol that will still give you a buzz That's why Indian researcher Harsha Chigurupati developed a compound purported to help protect against liver and DNA damage caused by consuming alcohol - called NTX - 'no-tox.' In a study funded by Chigurupati, biomarkers that indicate liver damage were 93% lower for people who drank NTX-infused vodka versus people who drank regular vodka - and, later studies showed that NTX-infused vodka reduced DNA damage caused by drinking regular alcohol.

Alcoholism and drug council holds annual meeting

Developer of drug treatment facility at Lodge and Spa at Cordillera...

The company seeking to develop a drug rehabilitation facility at the former Lodge and Spa at Cordillera has sued residents of the luxury Vail Valley community who are battling the plan. CSMN Investments, which purchased the property this summer as part of a $136 million plan to convert the lodge into a high-end drug and alcohol abuse treatment center, argues the Cordillera Property Owners Association and Cordillera Metropolitan District violated federal discrimination laws under the Americans with Disabilities Act when the groups sued to block the sale and redevelopment of the property.

LSU gets grant to study exercise in drinkers with HIV/AIDS

An LSU Health professor has $390,000 to study whether exercise can help avert insulin resistance, pre-diabetes and other metabolic disorders in heavy drinkers with HIV. Louisiana State University Health New Orleans says the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded the two-year grant to Dr. Patricia Molina, head of physiology.

Reformed addicts to aid homeless substance users under Cuomo plan

Recovering addicts will help homeless people struggling with substance abuse get treatment under a new initiative unveiled Friday by Gov. Cuomo. Under the initiative, the state's Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services will deploy "certified recovery peer advocates" to do outreach at city homeless shelters and provide guidance to substance abusers.
